Each year we see trends in many aspects of our lives – from new fashions to wear to the most popular snacks to try! The same is true for vaping, and each year as we see the vaping world expand and evolve, the ways in which we vape are also changing.
As we are not able to see the future, these are merely predictions based on trends we can already see taking off and insights from industry leaders in the vaping world.
More People Switching to Vaping
Each year, we have seen a huge increase in the number of people vaping in the UK. Back in 2011, there were only around 700,000 people recorded vaping in the UK. In 2020, this figure was up to 3.2 million, and it is expected this will continue to increase.
However, this will largely depend on the effects of COVID on the vaping industry in 2021. There was not much growth in the number of people vaping in 2020 compared with 2019, and this was partly due to the fact that many vape shops had to close during the lockdowns.
Growth of Online Vape Shops
With the COVID lockdowns forcing many vape stores to close during 2020 and into 2021, it is likely the online platform will grow exponentially for vapers in 2021.
Traditionally, vape shops have been the number one spot for vapers to get their devices and E-Liquid in the UK. In 2016, the BBC reported that 79% of vape products were bought in physical vape stores, with only 21% of the business going to online retailers.
While we see more stores moving online in all areas of retail, vape stores have prevailed on the high street due to the help and advice that they offer vapers both new and experienced.

Rise in Popularity of Nicotine Salts
It is expected that nicotine salts will continue to grow in popularity this year. Lots of new products have come onto the market in recent years, and nicotine salts were one of them, first becoming available in 2017.
In 2020, nicotine salts became a big trend for new and old vapers alike, and this is set to continue into 2021, with more brands releasing nicotine salt options.
Nicotine salts are generally available in 20mg bottles, but with the popularity of this form of nicotine growing, we may start to see a more diverse range of strengths introduced.
More People Choosing Pod Vapes
We can expect to see a turn towards more simple devices, such as pod vapes. People want their vaping experience to be as easy as possible, especially when first making the transition from smoking.
There may also be a turn away from bulkier vape devices and big cloud producing mods for some vapers, due to an increased demand for more discreet vaping options.
The Potential For More Taxes on Vaping
Shane MacGuill, Senior Head of Tobacco Research for Euromonitor International speculates that the COVID-19 pandemic may have a negative impact on vaping in 2021.
He posits that the government may seek to recoup public expenditure by increasing taxation on vaping products. This, in turn, may limit the number of new vaping products and brands that are launched in 2021.
At the moment, this is an unknown situation, so we will have to wait and see the full effects that the pandemic will have on the industry in 2021.
